THE LOW-STRESS ABRASION RESISTANCE OF AL ALLOYS-MATRIX COMPOSITES PREPARED BY SQUEEZE CASTING IS DISCUSSED. THE MATRIX ALLOYS WERE LM11 (AL-4.5 CU) AND LM5 (AL-3.75 MG). THE COMPOSITE CONSISTED OF 10 VOL.% EACH OF AL2O3 FIBER, SIC FIBER AND SIC PARTICLES. A STANDARD RUBBER WHEEL ABRASION TEST APPARATUS WAS USED FOR ABRASION TESTS. QUARTZ PARTICLES WERE GRAVITY FED BETWEEN THE RUBBER WHEEL AND THE SAMPLE. SEM EXAMINATION WAS USED TO AID IN STUDYING THE MATERIAL REMOVAL MECHANISMS. SEM EXAMINATION OF TRANSVERSE SECTIONS WAS USED TO STUDY THE MICROSTRUCTURAL CHANGES IN THE REGIONS CLOSE TO ABRADED SURFACES. A DECREASE IN ABRASIVE WEAR RATES DECREASED GRADUALLY WITH TEST INTERVALS UNTIL A STEADY VALUE WAS ATTAINED. THIS WAS CREDITED TO THE PROTRUSION OF THE REINFORCEMENT PHASE AND ABRASION-INDUCED WORK HARDENING OF THE MATRIX IN THE REGIONS CLOSE TO THE ABRADED SURFACE. THE ABRASION RESISTANCE OF COMPOSITES WAS CONTROLLED BY THE FIBER (OR PARTICLE)/ MATRIX INTERFACE.
