Abstract

he erosivc-cotrc~sive wear rate of a cast AI-Si ( LM6} alloy+ I0 wt.% SiC particle composite in a slurry consisting of water containing sulphuric actd and hydrochloric acid and '4{) wt.% sand ( size: 150 +_ 10 #m ). has been predicted through factorial design of experiments. The wear rate (Y) can be expressed in terms of the coded values of radial distance ( x, ). angle of inclination of the .',aunples with respect to their direction of rotation in the slurry (x:) and distance traversed I x+ ) by the following linear regression equation: Y= 21.2 + 14.87.~1 + 3.47x: + 4.025x + + 2.65xj x.. + 3.05xl x.++ 1.45x, x ~+ 1.375x t x:+¢ ,. where the multiplication factor is I0 t~ m"/m. This equation suggests that radial distance has the maximum effect on the wear rate and one must take into account Ih¢ effect of interaction of the parameters for predicting wear rate ofcoml~site materials.
